Day 1: Jaisalmer – Into the Golden City

As you approach Jaisalmer, the fort seems to rise out of the sand itself. Built entirely of yellow sandstone, this place glows like a dream during golden hour.

Start by checking into a haveli close to the old city. Don’t rush—this isn’t a place to “check off sights.” Take your time exploring:

• Jaisalmer Fort, one of the few living forts in the world, where homes, temples, and markets exist inside ancient walls

• Patwon Ki Haveli, a cluster of historic homes adorned with filigree-like carvings

• Sadar Bazaar, where you’ll find camel leather bags, tie-dye scarves, and handmade silver jewelry
  
  

Evening idea: Climb up to a rooftop café inside the fort and just sit with a cup of chai as the city turns amber.

Day 2: Desert Safari – Silence, Sand & Song

Leave the city behind and head to Khuri or Sam Sand Dunes—both about 45 minutes out. The road dips and rolls through dusty plains before the dunes rise like soft mountains.

Once you’re there:

• Go for a camel ride at sunset—bumpy, yes, but worth it for the view

• Hop into a jeep safari if you prefer something more fast-paced

• Settle into a desert camp, where dinner is served under the stars

• Watch Kalbeliya dancers twirl as the dholak beats echo into the night

Day 3: The Calm After the Sandstorm

Return to Jaisalmer and take it slow today.

• Gadisar Lake is ideal for a morning stroll or a paddle boat ride

• Walk through Bada Bagh, a quiet stretch of cenotaphs built for royal families

• Wander the lesser-known lanes behind the fort—some of the best craftspeople work out of tiny rooms with no signs
  
  

Dinner idea: Skip the hotel buffet. Try Trio Restaurant or find a rooftop dhaba with local fare and fort views.

Day 4: Bikaner – Spice, Stone & Surprise

Head east to Bikaner (about 5 hours by road). While less talked about, this city offers its own desert flavor—more red sandstone, fewer tourists, and seriously good food.

• Walk through Junagarh Fort, filled with palaces and vintage weaponry

• See the Lallgarh Palace, part museum, part hotel

• Drop by the original Bikaneri Bhujia outlet—yes, it’s worth it

• Pick up embroidered mojaris, camel-hide journals, and miniature art in the local markets

Day 5: Of Rats and Camels

Your last day takes a slightly eccentric turn. Drive to Karni Mata Temple in Deshnok, where hundreds of rats roam freely—and are considered sacred. It's not for everyone, but it's definitely memorable.

• Visit the National Research Centre on Camels—you can even try camel milk kulfi
